Genesis
The International Institute of Information Technology, a Deemed University, popularly known as IIIT-B, was established in 1999 with a vision to contribute to the IT world by focusing on education and research, entrepreneurship and innovation. The Institute is a registered not-for-profit society funded jointly by the Government of Karnataka and the IT industry.
Since its inception, IIIT-B, with its unique model of education, research, and industry interaction, has grown in stature to become an institution of considerable repute in academic as well as corporate circles. The Institute works in partnership with the corporate sector, while retaining the freedom of an academic institution. It is inspired by other renowned institutions, and also strives to emulate an academic culture that is on part with the best international institutions.

To build on the track record set by India in general and Bangalore in particular, to enable India to play a key role in the global IT scenario through a world class institute with a focus on education & research, entrepreneurship and innovation
Impact
Within a short span of seven years IIIT-B has established a name for itself as demonstrated by the fact that
- IIIT-B has been conferred the status of a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act by the Universities Grant Commission
- IIIT-B has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Government of India
- IIIT-B has graduated 879 M Tech students in IT
- IIIT-B is the Principal Agency executing the Rs 3 Crore project on Telematics Demonstration as part of CAR (Core Committee on Automotive Research)
- Daimler Chrysler, HP, ICICI, iFlex and STPI have established Chair Professorships at IIIT-B
- Three companies (Backend Bangalore, Tutor Vista and QSO Technologies India Private Limited) have been successfully incubated at IIIT-B
- IIIT-B was awarded Karnataka's Best IT Export Award 2007 for the innovative employment program towards upliftment of social /economic weaker sections on August 8, 2007
- Professor GNS Prasanna named for the IETE BV Baliga Award, given annually to a person for outstanding contribution in the field of Electronics and Tele-communication with emphasis on R & D and industrial development.
- IIIT-B signs CAS agreement with IBM.
- Huawei Technologies, the global telecom equipment major based in China, institutes scholarships to IIIT-B students effective Aug 1, 2007
